Part (a) · 2 marks
Work out the average of the eight temperatures.
- 1Total = 1 + 10 + 8 − 3 − 2 + 10 + 7 + 9 = 40
- 2Mean = 40 ÷ 8 = 5 °C
Answer5
Part (b) · 2 marks
Work out the middle value of the eight temperatures.
- 1In order: −3, −2, 1, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10
- 2Middle two values are 7 and 8
- 3Median = (7 + 8) ÷ 2 = 7.5 °C
Answer7.5
Part (c) · 2 marks
A ninth temperature makes the range 5 larger; find both possible values.
- 1Range = 10 − (−3) = 13
- 2New range = 13 + 5 = 18
- 3Lower: 10 − 18 = −8
- 4Higher: −3 + 18 = 15
Answer−8 or 15
