The question, in short

A fair hexagonal spinner numbered 1 to 6 is spun twice; complete a tree diagram for landing on 5 and work out the probability of 5 on both spins.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Fill in the missing probabilities on the two-stage tree diagram for landing on 5 or not on 5.

  1. 1P(5) = 1/6 on every spin
  2. 2P(not 5) = 1 − 1/6 = 5/6
  3. 3Fill in 5/6 on the first branch and 1/6, 5/6 on each pair of second branches

AnswerFirst spin: does not land on 5 = 5/6; second spin (both pairs): lands on 5 = 1/6, does not land on 5 = 5/6

Part (b) · 2 marks

Calculate the probability that both spins land on 5.

  1. 1P(5 and 5) = 1/6 × 1/6
  2. 2= 1/36
