The question, in short
On two diagrams of triangles, add shading so that the first shape has rotational symmetry order 3 and the second has two lines of symmetry.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 1 mark
Shade more of the 12 congruent triangles in the regular hexagon so the completed pattern has rotational symmetry order 3.
- 1Order 3 means the pattern repeats every 360° ÷ 3 = 120°
- 2Rotate the existing shaded triangles through 120° and 240° about the centre and shade those triangles too
AnswerCorrect shading giving rotational symmetry of order 3 (the shaded pattern repeated every 120°)
Part (b) · 1 mark
Shade one more small equilateral triangle in the six-pointed star so the finished shape has two lines of symmetry.
- 1The two shaded triangles lie opposite each other across the centre
- 2Shade the small triangle that makes the shading symmetrical about the line through them and the perpendicular line through the centre
AnswerCorrect triangle shaded (the one completing a pattern with two lines of symmetry)
