The question, in short

On a 4 by 4 grid of small squares, choose one additional square to shade so that the shaded pattern gains the stated symmetry in each part.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 1 mark

Given three shaded squares, shade one more small square so the whole diagram has one line of symmetry.

  1. 1Shade row 2, column 1: the pattern is then symmetric in the diagonal from top-left to bottom-right
  2. 2(Or shade row 3, column 4: symmetric in the other diagonal)

AnswerShade row 2, column 1 or shade row 3, column 4 (rows counted from the top, columns from the left)

Part (b) · 1 mark

Given three shaded squares, shade one more small square so the diagram has rotational symmetry of order 2.

  1. 1Rotating 180° about the centre sends row 1 col 4 to row 4 col 1 (already shaded)
  2. 2Row 3 col 1 goes to row 2 col 4, so shade row 2, column 4

AnswerShade row 2, column 4 (rows counted from the top, columns from the left)
