The question, in short

Calculate the volume of a frustum with top radius 8 cm, bottom radius 12 cm and vertical height 9 cm.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 5 marks

  1. 1h/8 = (h + 9)/12 ⇒ 12h = 8h + 72 ⇒ h = 18
  2. 2Full cone height = 18 + 9 = 27 cm
  3. 3Large cone = 1/3 π × 12² × 27 = 1296π
  4. 4Small cone = 1/3 π × 8² × 18 = 384π
  5. 5Frustum = 1296π − 384π = 912π = 2865.1… ≈ 2870 cm³

Answer2870 or 2865 to 2866 (912π)
