The question, in short

Find the volume of a solid formed by removing a small cone from the top of a larger cone with height 12.5 cm, base diameter 9.2 cm, and solid height 5.5 cm.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1Large cone: V = 1/3 × π × 4.6² × 12.5 = 276.98… cm³
  2. 2Small cone height = 12.5 − 5.5 = 7 cm; radius r/4.6 = 7/12.5, so r = 2.576 cm
  3. 3Small cone: V = 1/3 × π × 2.576² × 7 = 48.64… cm³
  4. 4Solid = 276.98… − 48.64… = 228.3… ≈ 228 cm³
