The question, in short

Complete a table for y = 5/x and draw its graph on the grid for −5 ≤ x ≤ −1 and 1 ≤ x ≤ 5.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Fill in the two missing y values in the table for y = 5/x at x = −4 and x = 4.

  1. 1x = −4: y = 5 ÷ (−4) = −1.25
  2. 2x = 4: y = 5 ÷ 4 = 1.25

Answer−1.25, 1.25

Part (b) · 4 marks

Plot the graph of y = 5/x on the grid over the two intervals −5 ≤ x ≤ −1 and 1 ≤ x ≤ 5.

  1. 1Plot (−5, −1), (−4, −1.25), (−2.5, −2), (−2, −2.5), (−1, −5) and join with a smooth curve
  2. 2Plot (1, 5), (2, 2.5), (2.5, 2), (4, 1.25), (5, 1) and join with a separate smooth curve
  3. 3Do not join the two branches across x = 0

AnswerCorrect curve
