The question, in short

Solve the simultaneous equations 3x + 5y = 23 and 6x − 4y = 11, showing all working.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1(first equation) × 2: 6x + 10y = 46
  2. 2Subtract 6x − 4y = 11: 14y = 35, so y = 2.5
  3. 33x + 5 × 2.5 = 23 → 3x = 10.5
  4. 4x = 3.5, y = 2.5

Answerx = 3.5, y = 2.5
