The question, in short
Use the travel graph of two trains between Town, Port and Cove to read off times, a stop duration, a journey-time difference, a passing time, and find train A's average speed in km/h.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 1 mark
State the departure time of train B from Cove, read from the graph.
- 1Line B starts at Cove (23 km) at 14 10
Answer14 10
Part (b) · 1 mark
Find how long train A waits at Port, using the horizontal section of its line.
- 1Train A is flat at Port from 14 18 to 14 22
- 2Stop = 4 minutes
Answer4
Part (c) · 2 marks
Calculate how many minutes longer train A's full journey takes than train B's.
- 1Train A: 14 00 to 14 40 = 40 minutes
- 2Train B: 14 10 to 14 48 = 38 minutes
- 340 − 38 = 2 minutes
Answer2
Part (d) · 1 mark
State the time when the two trains meet, from where the lines cross.
- 1The lines cross at 14 25
Answer14 25
Part (e) · 3 marks
Calculate train A's average speed from Town to Cove in kilometres per hour, using 23 km and its journey time.
- 1Distance = 23 km, time = 40 minutes = 40/60 hours
- 2Speed = 23 ÷ 40 × 60 = 34.5 km/h
