The question, in short

Simplify the algebraic fraction (3x − 2 − 3xy + 2y)/(1 − y²), showing the factorisation needed to cancel common factors.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1Numerator: 3x − 2 − y(3x − 2) = (3x − 2)(1 − y)
  2. 2Denominator: 1 − y² = (1 − y)(1 + y)
  3. 3(3x − 2)(1 − y) / ((1 − y)(1 + y))
  4. 4= (3x − 2)/(1 + y)

Answer(3x − 2)/(1 + y)
