The question, in short

Using an isosceles triangle with base 4 cm and perpendicular height 5 cm, find the equal side x, then draw a net of a square-based pyramid whose faces match it on a 1 cm² grid.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Work out the length of the equal side x of the isosceles triangle from its base and height.

  1. 1The height bisects the base: half base = 4 ÷ 2 = 2 cm
  2. 2x² = 5² + 2² = 29
  3. 3x = √29 = 5.385… ≈ 5.39

Answer5.39 or 5.385…

Part (b) · 3 marks

Draw, on the 1 cm² grid, a net for a square-based pyramid with four identical triangular faces matching the given triangle.

  1. 1Draw a 4 cm by 4 cm square for the base
  2. 2On each side of the square draw an isosceles triangle with base 4 cm and height 5 cm (apex 5 cm out from the midpoint of the side)
  3. 3The net is the square with 4 identical triangles

AnswerCorrect net of the pyramid
