The question, in short

For the function 3 cos 2x − 1, state its amplitude and period, then draw its graph over 0° ≤ x ≤ 360° on the given axes.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

State the amplitude and the period of 3 cos 2x − 1.

  1. 1Amplitude is the coefficient of cos: 3
  2. 2Period = 360° ÷ 2 = 180°

AnswerAmplitude = 3, Period = 180° (or π)

Part (b) · 3 marks

Sketch y = 3 cos 2x − 1 for 0° ≤ x ≤ 360° on axes marked every 90° with y from −5 to 5.

  1. 1Centre line y = −1, amplitude 3: max 3 − 1 = 2, min −3 − 1 = −4
  2. 2Period 180°, so two full cycles in 0° to 360°
  3. 3x = 0°: y = 2; x = 90°: y = −4; x = 180°: y = 2; x = 270°: y = −4; x = 360°: y = 2

AnswerCosine curve with maximum 2 and minimum −4 (amplitude 3 about y = −1), period 180°: starts at (0°, 2), minima at (90°, −4) and (270°, −4), maximum at (180°, 2), ends at (360°, 2)
