The question, in short

Given points A(−2, 3) and B(4, 7), find the midpoint of AB, then find the equation of the line of points equidistant from A and B.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 1 mark

Find the coordinates of the midpoint of the line segment joining A(−2, 3) and B(4, 7).

  1. 1((−2 + 4)/2, (3 + 7)/2)
  2. 2= (1, 5)

Answer(1, 5)

Part (b) · 4 marks

Find the equation of line l, the locus of points equidistant from A(−2, 3) and B(4, 7).

  1. 1l is the perpendicular bisector of AB
  2. 2Gradient AB = (7 − 3)/(4 − (−2)) = 4/6 = 2/3
  3. 3Gradient of l = −3/2
  4. 4y − 5 = −3/2(x − 1), so 2y − 10 = −3x + 3
  5. 52y + 3x = 13

Answer2y + 3x = 13
