The question, in short
Solve the simultaneous equations x + 2y = 7 and 3x + 4y = 11, showing your working.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 3 marks
- 1Multiply the first equation by 2: 2x + 4y = 14
- 2Subtract from 3x + 4y = 11: 3x − 2x = 11 − 14, so x = −3
- 3Substitute: −3 + 2y = 7, so 2y = 10, y = 5
- 4x = −3, y = 5
Answerx = −3, y = 5
