The question, in short

Solve a linear equation in x, then solve a pair of simultaneous equations in x and y, showing all working.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Find the value of x that satisfies 4x − 7 = 9.

  1. 14x = 9 + 7 = 16
  2. 2x = 16 ÷ 4 = 4

Answer4

Part (b) · 3 marks

Solve 5y − 8x = −5 and 3y + 2x = 14 simultaneously, showing all working.

  1. 1Multiply 3y + 2x = 14 by 4: 12y + 8x = 56
  2. 2Add to 5y − 8x = −5: 17y = 51, y = 3
  3. 33 × 3 + 2x = 14, so 2x = 5
  4. 4x = 2 1/2, y = 3

Answerx = 2 1/2, y = 3
