The question, in short
Given three distances in a challenge, work with their ratio, a start time from a walking speed, and a maximum possible cycling speed from rounded values.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Express the walk, cycle and swim distances as a ratio in simplest form.
- 16.3 km = 6300 m
- 26300 : 3000 : 1800
- 3÷ 300: 21 : 10 : 6
Answer21 : 10 : 6
Part (b) · 3 marks
Using her walking speed of 1.4 m/s and finishing time of 11 05, work out when she began walking.
- 1Time = 6300 ÷ 1.4 = 4500 seconds
- 24500 ÷ 60 = 75 minutes = 1 hour 15 minutes
- 311 05 − 1 hour 15 minutes = 09 50
Answer09 50
Part (c) · 3 marks
With 3000 m and 450 s each rounded to the nearest 10, find the greatest possible average cycling speed in m/s.
- 1Upper bound of distance = 3005 m
- 2Lower bound of time = 445 s
- 3Upper bound of speed = 3005 ÷ 445 = 6.752… ≈ 6.75 m/s
Answer6.75 or 6.752 to 6.753 or 6 67/89
