The question, in short

Line L has equation 5y + 3x = 10. Rearrange it for y, then find the equation of line P, perpendicular to L and passing through (6, 7).

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Rearrange 5y + 3x = 10 so that y is the subject.

  1. 15y = 10 − 3x
  2. 2y = 2 − (3/5)x

Answer2 − (3/5)x

Part (b) · 3 marks

Line P is perpendicular to L and goes through (6, 7). Find the equation of P.

  1. 1Gradient of L = −3/5, so gradient of P = 5/3
  2. 27 = (5/3) × 6 + c, so 7 = 10 + c and c = −3
  3. 3y = (5/3)x − 3

Answery = (5/3)x − 3
