The question, in short

Given line L as 2y = 5x + 3, determine the equation of a line at right angles to L that goes through (1, 4).

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 12y = 5x + 3 so y = (5/2)x + 3/2, gradient of L = 5/2
  2. 2Perpendicular gradient = −1 ÷ 5/2 = −2/5
  3. 3y = −(2/5)x + c through (1, 4): 4 = −2/5 + c
  4. 4c = 4 + 2/5 = 22/5
  5. 5y = −(2/5)x + 22/5 (or 5y + 2x = 22)

Answery = −(2/5)x + 22/5 or 5y + 2x = 22
