The question, in short

Simplify two algebraic expressions: one by collecting like terms in a, b, and one by dividing powers of c.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Collect the a terms and the b terms in 5a + 3b + 2a − 7b to give a simplified expression.

  1. 15a + 2a = 7a, 3b − 7b = −4b
  2. 2= 7a − 4b

Answer7a − 4b

Part (b) · 1 mark

Simplify c¹² ÷ c⁴ using the rule for dividing powers with the same base.

  1. 1c¹² ÷ c⁴ = c¹²⁻⁴ = c⁸

Answerc⁸
