The question, in short

A rectangle has width w stated as 7 cm to the nearest centimetre and area 161.8 cm² to the nearest 0.1 cm². Find the range of w and the greatest possible length.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Fill in the two missing values in the inequality showing all possible values of w, given 7 cm rounded to the nearest centimetre.

  1. 1Half of 1 cm is 0.5 cm
  2. 2Lower bound 7 − 0.5 = 6.5, upper bound 7 + 0.5 = 7.5

Answer6.5 ≤ w < 7.5

Part (b) · 2 marks

Using the area rounded to the nearest 0.1 cm², work out the largest possible value of the rectangle's length.

  1. 1Upper bound of area = 161.85
  2. 2Lower bound of width = 6.5
  3. 3Upper bound of length = 161.85 ÷ 6.5 = 24.9 cm
