The question, in short

Given rounded masses of a bag of almonds and of large and small boxes, state a lower bound and work out an upper bound for a mass difference.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 1 mark

The almond bag weighs 125 g to the nearest gram; state the smallest possible mass.

  1. 1Lower bound = 125 − 0.5 = 124.5 g

Answer124.5

Part (b) · 2 marks

Large box 500 g and small box 250 g, each rounded to the nearest 10 g; find the greatest possible value of large minus small.

  1. 1Upper bound of large box = 505 g, lower bound of small box = 245 g
  2. 2505 − 245 = 260 g

Answer260
