The question, in short

Solve the equation 3x ÷ (x + 1) − 2 ÷ (x − 1) = 3, showing working for full marks.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1Multiply by (x + 1)(x − 1): 3x(x − 1) − 2(x + 1) = 3(x + 1)(x − 1)
  2. 23x² − 3x − 2x − 2 = 3x² − 3
  3. 3−5x − 2 = −3
  4. 4−5x = −1, so x = 1/5
