The question, in short

Solve the simultaneous equations 5x + 4y = 14 and 3x − 2y = 15, showing all working.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Multiply the second equation by 2: 6x − 4y = 30
  2. 2Add to 5x + 4y = 14: 11x = 44
  3. 3x = 4
  4. 43 × 4 − 2y = 15 so −2y = 3
  5. 5x = 4, y = −3/2

Answerx = 4, y = −3/2
