The question, in short
Using a speed–time graph for cyclists A and B over 20 seconds, find A's acceleration and determine which cyclist covers more distance and by how many metres.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 1 mark
Calculate the acceleration of cyclist A over the first 20 seconds from the graph.
- 1Acceleration = change in speed ÷ time
- 2= (7 − 1)/20 = 6/20 m/s²
Answer6/20
Part (b) · 3 marks
Compare the distances travelled by A and B in the first 20 seconds and state the difference in metres.
- 1Distance = area under graph
- 2Cyclist A: 1/2 × (1 + 7) × 20 = 80 m
- 3Cyclist B: 5 × 20 = 100 m
- 4100 − 80 = 20, so cyclist B, by 20 metres
AnswerCyclist B, by 20 metres
