The question, in short
Using a speed–time graph for a car over 90 seconds, find the unknown speed V from a total distance of 1.01 km, then find the deceleration over the final 20 seconds.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 4 marks
The car covers 1.01 km in 90 seconds; use the graph's three sections to calculate the value of V.
- 1Distance = area under graph; 1.01 km = 1010 m
- 2Area = 1/2 × 30 × (24 − V) + 70V + 1/2 × 20 × V
- 3= 360 − 15V + 70V + 10V = 360 + 65V
- 4360 + 65V = 1010
- 565V = 650, V = 10
Answer10
Part (b) · 1 mark
Given V = 10, the speed falls from V m/s at 70 s to 0 at 90 s; calculate the deceleration.
- 1From part (a), V = 10 m/s
- 2Speed falls from 10 to 0 between t = 70 and t = 90, which is 20 seconds
- 3Deceleration = 10 ÷ 20 = 0.5 m/s²
