The question, in short
Solve the equation (2x + 1)/(x + 4) + 5 = x, showing all working and giving answers to 2 decimal places.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 6 marks
- 1Multiply by (x + 4): 2x + 1 + 5(x + 4) = x(x + 4)
- 22x + 1 + 5x + 20 = x² + 4x
- 3x² − 3x − 21 = 0
- 4x = (3 ± √((−3)² − 4 × 1 × (−21)))/2 = (3 ± √93)/2
- 5x = 6.321… or x = −3.321…
- 6x = 6.32, x = −3.32
Answer6.32, −3.32
