The question, in short

Answer four short number questions: identify a prime in a range, evaluate a power, find a cube root, and compute and round a calculator expression.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 1 mark

State the prime number lying between 90 and 100.

  1. 192, 94, 96 and 98 are even; 91 = 7 × 13, 93 = 3 × 31, 95 = 5 × 19, 99 = 9 × 11
  2. 297 has no factors other than 1 and 97, so the prime is 97

Answer97

Part (b) · 1 mark

Calculate the value of 3 to the power 6.

  1. 13⁶ means 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3
  2. 23 × 3 × 3 = 27 and 27 × 27 = 729

Answer729

Part (c) · 1 mark

Determine the cube root of 6859.

  1. 1The cube root asks which number cubed gives 6859
  2. 219 × 19 = 361 and 361 × 19 = 6859, so the cube root is 19

Answer19

Part (di) · 2 marks

Evaluate √(8.4 + 9.1²) ÷ (4.1 × 0.6) and record every digit shown on the calculator.

  1. 1Top: 9.1² = 82.81, and 82.81 + 8.4 = 91.21, so the top is √91.21 = 9.550392662
  2. 2Bottom: 4.1 × 0.6 = 2.46
  3. 39.550392662 ÷ 2.46 = 3.88227344

Answer3.88227344

Part (dii) · 1 mark

Round the result from part (d)(i) to 1 decimal place.

  1. 13.88227344 to 1 decimal place: the second decimal is 8, so round up
  2. 23.88227344 = 3.9 to 1 d.p.

Answer3.9
