The question, in short
Solve the simultaneous equations 4x + 2y = 9 and x − 4y = 9, showing clear algebraic working.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 3 marks
- 1Multiply the first equation by 2: 8x + 4y = 18
- 2Add x − 4y = 9: 9x = 27
- 3x = 3
- 4Substitute: 4 × 3 + 2y = 9, so 2y = −3
- 5y = −1.5
Answerx = 3, y = −1.5
