Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 1 mark

State which class interval has the highest frequency.

  1. 1The modal class has the highest frequency
  2. 2The highest frequency is 16, so the modal class is 11 − 15

Answer11 − 15

Part (b) · 4 marks

Using class midpoints and frequencies, calculate an estimate of the mean number of birds.

  1. 1Midpoints: 3, 8, 13, 18
  2. 2Σfx = 3 × 5 + 8 × 10 + 13 × 16 + 18 × 9 = 15 + 80 + 208 + 162 = 465
  3. 3Mean = 465 ÷ 40 = 11.625

Answer11.625
