The question, in short
Line L is 4y − 6x = 33 and line M passes through A (5, 6) and B (−4, k). Given L is perpendicular to M, work out k.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 4 marks
- 1Rearrange L: y = (3/2)x + 33/4, so gradient of L = 3/2
- 2M is perpendicular, so gradient of M = −2/3
- 3Gradient of AB = (k − 6)/(−4 − 5) = (k − 6)/(−9)
- 4(k − 6)/(−9) = −2/3, so k − 6 = 6
- 5k = 12
