The question, in short

Using 12 identical tiles arranged around a shaded rectangle with overall height 67 cm and width 123 cm, work out the shaded rectangle's area.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 5 marks

  1. 1Let tile length = L and width = W
  2. 2From the diagram: 2L + W = 67 and 4L + W = 123
  3. 3Subtract: 2L = 56, so L = 28 and W = 67 − 56 = 11
  4. 4Shaded rectangle: (67 − 2×11) × (123 − 2×11) = 45 × 101
  5. 5Area = 4545 cm²
