The question, in short

Complete a table of y values for y = x² − x/2 − 3 at x from −3 to 3, then plot the graph on the grid for x from −3 to 3.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Fill in the missing y values in the table for y = x² − x/2 − 3 at the given x values from −3 to 3.

  1. 1y = x² − x/2 − 3, so put each x into the rule
  2. 2x = −2: 4 + 1 − 3 = 2
  3. 3x = −1: 1 + 0.5 − 3 = −1.5
  4. 4x = 0: 0 + 0 − 3 = −3
  5. 5x = 2: 4 − 1 − 3 = 0

Answer2, −1.5, −3, 0

Part (b) · 2 marks

Draw the curve y = x² − x/2 − 3 on the grid for x values between −3 and 3.

  1. 1Plot the seven points from the table
  2. 2Join them with a smooth curve, not straight lines
  3. 3The lowest point is between x = 0 and x = 1

AnswerA smooth curve through (−3, 7.5), (−2, 2), (−1, −1.5), (0, −3), (1, −2.5), (2, 0) and (3, 4.5)
