The question, in short
Complete a table of values for y = x² − 3x − 1 and draw its graph on the grid for x from −2 to 4.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Fill in the missing y values in the table for y = x² − 3x − 1 at the given x values.
- 1Substitute each missing x into y = x² − 3x − 1
- 2x = −2: 4 + 6 − 1 = 9 and x = −1: 1 + 3 − 1 = 3
- 3x = 1: 1 − 3 − 1 = −3 and x = 3: 9 − 9 − 1 = −1
- 4The missing values are 9, 3, −3, −1
Answer9, 3, −3, −1
Part (b) · 2 marks
Plot the graph of y = x² − 3x − 1 on the grid for x from −2 to 4.
- 1Plot the points from part (a): (−2,9), (−1,3), (0,−1), (1,−3), (2,−3), (3,−1), (4,3)
- 2Draw a smooth curve through all the points
- 3The graph has a U-shape with minimum between x=1 and x=2
AnswerA smooth curve through (−2, 9), (−1, 3), (0, −1), (1, −3), (2, −3), (3, −1), (4, 3)
