The question, in short

Work out when the container is fully emptied, given the prism dimensions, a constant pumping rate, and that the level falls 20 cm between 10 30 and 12 00.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1Water pumped out between 10 30 and 12 00 = 30 × 20 × 125 = 75 000 cm³
  2. 2Rate of pumping = 75 000 ÷ 1.5 = 50 000 cm³ per hour
  3. 3Water still in the container at 12 00 = 85 × 40 × 125 = 425 000 cm³
  4. 4Time needed to pump this out = 425 000 ÷ 50 000 = 8.5 hours = 8 hours 30 minutes
  5. 512 00 + 8 hours 30 minutes = 20 30
