The question, in short
Four whole numbers a, a, b, c with a < b < c have mode 7, median 8.5 and mean 9; find a, b and c.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 4 marks
- 1Mode is 7 and a < b < c, so a must appear more than once and be 7. So a = 7.
- 2The list is 7, 7, b, c with 7 < b < c.
- 3Median is average of second and third values: (7 + b) / 2 = 8.5
- 47 + b = 17
- 5b = 10
- 6Mean is 9, so sum = 4 × 9 = 36
- 77 + 7 + 10 + c = 36
- 824 + c = 36
- 9c = 12
- 10So a = 7, b = 10, c = 12
