The question, in short
Expand and simplify a product difference of two x-terms, find n from an index equation, solve a linear inequality in t, and show its solution on a number line.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Expand and simplify 4x(2x + 5) − 3x(2x − 3).
- 14x(2x + 5) = 8x² + 20x
- 2−3x(2x − 3) = −6x² + 9x
- 38x² + 20x − 6x² + 9x
- 42x² + 29x
Answer2x² + 29x
Part (b) · 2 marks
Given (y⁵ × yⁿ) ÷ y⁶ = y¹³, work out the value of n.
- 1y⁵ × yⁿ ÷ y⁶ = y¹³
- 2y^(5 + n − 6) = y¹³
- 35 + n − 6 = 13
- 4n − 1 = 13
- 5n = 14
Answer14
Part (ci) · 2 marks
Solve the inequality 7t − 8 < 2t + 7.
- 17t − 8 < 2t + 7
- 27t − 2t < 7 + 8
- 35t < 15
- 4t < 3
Answert < 3
Part (cii) · 1 mark
On the number line from −5 to 5, represent the solution set t < 3.
- 1draw open circle at 3
- 2draw line extending to the left from 3
Answeropen circle at t = 3 and a line with an arrow to the left
