The question, in short

Given the maximum point (5, 7) on y = f(x), state the coordinates of the maximum point after two transformations of the curve.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (i) · 1 mark

Find the maximum point coordinates for y = f(x + 9), a horizontal translation of the curve.

  1. 1x-coordinate: 5 − 9 = −4
  2. 2y-coordinate remains 7
  3. 3(−4, 7)

Answer(−4, 7)

Part (ii) · 1 mark

Find the maximum point coordinates for y = f(x) + 3, a vertical translation of the curve.

  1. 1x-coordinate remains 5
  2. 2y-coordinate: 7 + 3 = 10
  3. 3(5, 10)

Answer(5, 10)
