The question, in short
A curve y = f(x) has a minimum at (6, −3). Find the minimum coordinates after two transformations of the equation.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (i) · 1 mark
For y = f(x) + 10, state the coordinates of the minimum point.
- 1The transformation y = f(x) + 10 shifts the curve vertically up by 10 units.
- 2The y-coordinate of the minimum point increases by 10: −3 + 10 = 7.
- 3(6, −3) becomes (6, 7)
Answer(6, 7)
Part (ii) · 1 mark
For y = f(3x), state the coordinates of the minimum point.
- 1The transformation y = f(3x) compresses the curve horizontally by a scale factor of 1/3.
- 2The x-coordinate of the minimum point is divided by 3: 6 ÷ 3 = 2.
- 3(6, −3) becomes (2, −3)
Answer(2, −3)
