The question, in short
A curve y = f(x) has a single turning point at (6, 5). Find the turning point coordinates after two transformations of the curve.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 1 mark
For y = f(x − 4), state the coordinates of the turning point.
- 1The curve y = f(x − 4) is a horizontal shift of y = f(x) by 4 units to the right.
- 2x-coordinate: 6 + 4 = 10
- 3y-coordinate remains unchanged: 5
- 4(10, 5)
Answer(10, 5)
Part (b) · 1 mark
For y = f(3x), state the coordinates of the turning point.
- 1The curve y = f(3x) is a horizontal stretch of y = f(x) with scale factor 1/3.
- 2x-coordinate: 6 / 3 = 2
- 3y-coordinate remains unchanged: 5
- 4(2, 5)
Answer(2, 5)
