The question, in short

Use the histogram of tomato plant heights, given 12 plants in 75 < h ≤ 85, to estimate the probability a randomly chosen plant is taller than 82.5 cm.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 175−85 bar: 12 ÷ 10 = frequency density 1.2, so the other bars are 0.6, 0.8, 1 and 0.4
  2. 2Frequencies: 0.6 × 5 = 3, 0.8 × 10 = 8, 1 × 5 = 5, 12 and 0.4 × 5 = 2; total 30
  3. 3Above 82.5 cm: 1.2 × 2.5 = 3 plants, plus 2 plants from 85 to 90
  4. 4Probability = 5/30 = 1/6
