The question, in short
Six ordered numbers x, 5, y, z, 10, 12 have range 9, median 8 and mode 10. Find x, y and z.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 3 marks
- 1Range = 9, so 12 − x = 9
- 2x = 12 − 9 = 3
- 3Median of six numbers is average of 3rd and 4th: (y + z) / 2 = 8
- 4y + z = 16
- 5Mode is 10, so z must be 10 (since 10 appears at least twice and is the only mode)
- 6z = 10
- 7y = 16 − 10 = 6
Answerx = 3, y = 6, z = 10
