Part (a) · 2 marks

Write the ratio of 60 sheep to 24 cows in simplest form.

  1. 1number of sheep : number of cows = 60 : 24
  2. 2The highest common factor of 60 and 24 is 12.
  3. 360 ÷ 12 = 5 and 24 ÷ 12 = 2
  4. 4sheep : cows = 5 : 2

Answer5 : 2

Part (b) · 1 mark

Given white to brown ducks is 3:7, state what fraction of all ducks are white.

  1. 1white : brown = 3 : 7, so the ducks are split into 3 + 7 = 10 equal parts.
  2. 23 of those 10 parts are white ducks.
  3. 3The fraction of the ducks that are white is 3/10

Answer3/10

Part (c) · 3 marks

Giles and Sarah share hay 11:4 and Sarah gets 20 bales; find the total number shared.

  1. 1Sarah's share is 4 parts, and those 4 parts are 20 bales.
