The question, in short
Use the Celsius-Fahrenheit conversion graph to convert a 20 °C rise into Fahrenheit, and judge whether doubling 30 °C to 60 °C doubles 86 °F to 172 °F.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Find the Fahrenheit value matching a 20 °C temperature increase, using the graph's conversion line.
- 1Read temperature in °F at 0°C: approximately 32°F
- 2Read temperature in °F at 20°C: approximately 68°F
- 3Calculate difference: 68 − 32 = 36
Answer36
Part (b) · 1 mark
Decide if Maninder's claim about 60 °C equalling 172 °F is right, giving a reason.
- 1Read 60 °C from the graph: it is about 140 °F
- 2°F is not proportional to °C (the line does not pass through (0, 0)), so doubling fails
- 3No, 60 °C is about 140 °F, not 172 °F
AnswerNo, 60 °C is about 140 °F, not 172 °F
