Part (a) · 4 marks
Given 28 students in Class A with mean 75 and 32 in Class B, with overall mean 72.6, calculate the mean score for Class B.
- 1Total of all scores = (28 + 32) × 72.6 = 4356
- 2Total for Class A = 28 × 75 = 2100
- 3Total for Class B = 4356 − 2100 = 2256
- 4Mean for Class B = 2256 ÷ 32 = 70.5
Answer70.5
Part (b) · 3 marks
Class A: lowest 39, range 57. Class B: lowest 33, range 60. Determine the range of scores across all 60 students.
- 1Highest in Class A = 39 + 57 = 96; highest in Class B = 33 + 60 = 93
- 2Highest overall is 96 and lowest overall is 33
- 3Range = 96 − 33 = 63
