The question, in short
Line L₁ is y = 6 − 2x. Line L₂ is perpendicular to L₁ through (4, 7). Find the x-axis crossing coordinates of L₂.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 4 marks
- 1Gradient of L₁ is −2, so gradient of L₂ is 1/2
- 2L₂ through (4, 7): y − 7 = 1/2(x − 4), so y = 1/2x + 5
- 3On the x-axis y = 0: 1/2x + 5 = 0, so x = −10
- 4Coordinates: (−10, 0)
Answer(−10, 0)
