The question, in short

Given the graph of y = f(x) made of straight line segments through (−2, −1), (1, 3) and (4, −1), draw two related transformed graphs on the same grid.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Draw y = 2f(x) on the grid, using the given graph of f(x).

  1. 1The original points on y = f(x) are (−2, −1), (1, 3), (4, −1)
  2. 2To transform to y = 2f(x), multiply all y-coordinates by 2
  3. 3(−2, −1) becomes (−2, −2)
  4. 4(1, 3) becomes (1, 6)
  5. 5(4, −1) becomes (4, −2)
  6. 6Plot and join the points (−2, −2), (1, 6), (4, −2)

Answer(−2, −2), (1, 6), (4, −2)

Part (b) · 2 marks

Draw y = f(−x) on the grid, using the given graph of f(x).

  1. 1The original points on y = f(x) are (−2, −1), (1, 3), (4, −1)
  2. 2To transform to y = f(−x), multiply all x-coordinates by −1
  3. 3(−2, −1) becomes (2, −1)
  4. 4(1, 3) becomes (−1, 3)
  5. 5(4, −1) becomes (−4, −1)
  6. 6Plot and join the points (2, −1), (−1, 3), (−4, −1)

Answer(2, −1), (−1, 3), (−4, −1)
