The question, in short

Line L₁ has equation 2y = 6x − 5. Find an equation for the perpendicular line L₂ through (9, −1), giving it as ay + bx = c.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 12y = 6x − 5
  2. 2Gradient of L1 = 6 ÷ 2 = 3
  3. 3Gradient of L2 = −1/3 (since m1 × m2 = −1)
  4. 4L2 passes through (9, −1)
  5. 5y − (−1) = (−1/3)(x − 9)
  6. 6y + 1 = (−1/3)x + 3
  7. 7Multiply through by 3: 3y + 3 = −x + 9
  8. 83y + x = 6

Answer3y + x = 6
