The question, in short

Trapezium ABCD has parallel sides BC = 21.2 cm and AD, AB = 16.7 cm with right angles at A and B, and angle ADC = 43°. Find the perimeter to 3 significant figures.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1Drop a perpendicular from C to AD at E: CE = 16.7, AE = 21.2
  2. 2ED = 16.7 ÷ tan 43° = 17.908…
  3. 3CD = 16.7 ÷ sin 43° = 24.486…
  4. 4AD = 21.2 + 17.908… = 39.108…
  5. 5Perimeter = 16.7 + 21.2 + 24.486… + 39.108… = 101.49… = 101
