The question, in short

A curve y = f(x) has a single maximum at (−3, 4). Find the coordinates of the maximum point after each of two transformations of the equation.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (ai) · 1 mark

For y = f(x) − 6, state the coordinates of the maximum point.

  1. 1The maximum point of y = f(x) is (−3, 4).
  2. 2For y = f(x) − 6, subtract 6 from the y-coordinate.
  3. 34 − 6 = −2.
  4. 4So the new coordinates are (−3, −2).

Answer(−3, −2)

Part (aii) · 1 mark

For y = f(2x), state the coordinates of the maximum point.

  1. 1For y = f(2x), the x-values are scaled by a factor of 1/2.
  2. 2So the x-coordinate of the maximum becomes −3 × (1/2) = −1.5.
  3. 3The y-coordinate remains unchanged at 4.
  4. 4So the new coordinates are (−1.5, 4).

Answer(−1.5, 4)
