4MA1/2FR Jun 2022, Question 18: Describing Transformations

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1 · Paper 2FR (Foundation) · Calculator · 4 marks

The question, in short

Using the grid showing triangles A and B, identify the single transformation taking A to B, then draw A shifted by the vector (−4, 3) and label it C.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 3 marks

State the one transformation, with all its details, that carries triangle A onto triangle B.

  1. 1Triangle B is the same shape as triangle A but bigger, so the transformation is an enlargement.
  2. 2A side of triangle A of length 2 becomes the matching side of triangle B of length 6.
  3. 3Scale factor = 6 ÷ 2 = 3
  4. 4Join each vertex of A to the matching vertex of B and extend those lines backwards.
  5. 5The lines all meet at (3, 0), so that is the centre of enlargement.
  6. 6Enlargement, scale factor 3, centre (3, 0)

AnswerEnlargement, scale factor 3, centre (3, 0)

Part (b) · 1 mark

Draw triangle A moved by the vector (−4, 3) on the grid and name the result C.

  1. 1Triangle A has vertices (5, 1), (5, 3) and (6, 1).
  2. 2The vector (−4, 3) means move 4 left and 3 up.
  3. 3(5, 1) moves to (1, 4)
  4. 4(5, 3) moves to (1, 6)
  5. 5(6, 1) moves to (2, 4)
  6. 6Draw the triangle with vertices (1, 4), (1, 6) and (2, 4) and label it C.

AnswerTriangle drawn at (1, 4), (1, 6), (2, 4)
